Sock Puppet
Step 1:
You're going to start with your cardboard, felt, and a pencil. When grabbing a piece of cardboard to use, select once that is thin and flexible (a cheeze-it or pop-tart box is good). you need to be able to fold it evenly and easily.
Before tracing out the shape for the mouth, you need to decide what sort of creature you will be giving life to. The type of creature has baring on the shape and size of the mouth. Once this is decided, you can start drawing it out on the cardboard.
You can cut virtually any shape into the cardboard, and it doesn't have to be symmetrical! You might want your creature to have an over or under bite, or a beak. Perhaps he is a gabber with a huge mouth, or maye she's very shy. Once you come up with the shape of your mouth, trace it on the cardboard and cut it out.
While you are at it, you can trace the shape onto your felt (adding about a 1/4 inch seam allowance) and cut the felt shape out as well. This shape is the inside of your sock puppet's mouth.

Step 2:
Fold your sock in half with the whole heel facing up. (this means you are folding it in half in the opposite way a sock usually is folded). At the same time, fold your cardboard piece in half (the brown blob in the image) lay the carboard piece over the sock and cut the sock open from one corner of the cardboard to the other. You are making the opening for the mouth.
Step 3:
Turn the sock inside out and pin the felt piece into the opening. Using your sewing machine or your needle and thread stitch the felt in place then turn the sock right-side out. If you want to mouth to be soft, you can leave it as is, but if you want the mouth to be firm you can slide your piece of cardboard up inside. Now you can start adding facial features and clothing or accessories. Use whatever you want or can find, there's no right or wrong!
